'Boutique' Gyms | Beyond Fitness

We have boutique shops, boutique hotels, and boutique restaurants. However, 2019 took this one step further and completely embraced the dawning of the Boutique Gym.

Having already existed for a few years, boutique fitness was more of a concept that only circulated amongst the very elite. Although boutique fitness is still considered a luxury by many, it is becoming accepted as an essential part of our transition toward a more holistic approach to health and wellbeing.

So what exactly is the appeal? Well, Boutique gyms shun the conventional style of standard and franchise gyms. Rather than inhabiting large building spaces and offering a wide range of muscle-abusing, abs-stretching, ankle-straining machinery; boutique gyms provide a personalised service, which is usually centred around one area of fitness. For example, a boutique gym might only offer a range of spin classes and nothing else. However, your instructors would be certified specialists in leading spin classes; to the point where you would probably start wondering why you ever needed anything else. In addition to this, many boutique gyms invest in having a nutritionist of health guru onsite; going a step further to cater for their clientele’s fitness and health related needs, on a more intimate level.

Many boutique gym owners often give the same testimony when speaking of their establishments. This is, that their clients regularly attend, because of the sense of community that cannot be achieved in a normal large-scale gym environment. With incredibly small class sizes, you’ll soon find that everyone from your fellow class members to your fitness instructors, know your name, fitness goals, bad habits, and life history; and that’s the secret! Apparently, as creatures prone to experiencing intense feelings of embarrassment and shame, working out with people that we have grown to know and are comfortable with, fills us with a sense of empowerment that allows us to release our inhibitions and unashamedly reach for our fitness goals.

This bespoke service is usually offered on a pay-as-you-go basis; starting anywhere from £10 a class. If you’re not quite at the stage where you are ready to cut up your current gym membership and seek out your nearest boutique gym, then here are 3 boutique gyms that we feel are amongst the best examples of the amazing benefits you are currently missing out on!

ETHOS was founded by a husband and wife team, Dr Theo Koutroukides and Jennifer Hersch. Both Cambridge University graduates, Koutroukides and Hersch’s have also amassed more than 30 years of experience in professional sports, dance and scientific study. It is this knowledge that lead to the conception of ETHOS; a fitness hybrid which combines fitness, yoga and science to transform your mind and body, on a deeper than superficial level. Yoga, HIIT, TRX, Spin and Barre are all on offer here, as well as health assessments, tailored diet plans, and adrenal stress testing. As intense as this all sounds, ETHOS really proves itself to be a lifestyle gym through its onsite cocktail bar. This quirky addition serves botanical and medicinal cocktails, tailored to your requirements.

As if you couldn’t already tell from the name; 1Rebel actively refer to themselves as an “anti-gym”. In a way, this is 100% true, as this might be the only gym where you leave genuinely looking better than when you went in. This boutique gym stocks their changing rooms with high-end products such as, deodorant, make-up remover, body wash etc. Combined with their clothing retail space, and free Prosecco every Friday; you will have to work hard to convince people that you have actually joined a new gym and not just treating yourself to a fun day out. Speaking of fun, live MCs and jazz bands are just a few of the creative ways that 1Rebel have spiced up their Boxing, Spin and TRX classes to ensure you have the best experience possible.

For all kinds of reasons, cycling has enjoyed something of a renaissance over the last few years. People across the world are ditching their high-tech cars and trains in favour of this centuries-old method of transportation. In truth, though, there's a lot more to it than just getting from one place to another.  There is fitness, and health and meeting new people and build a sense of community even around it.

Neon Cycle was built to be a place where there is something for everyone. Whether you are a hard-core indoor cycling enthusiast or just starting out, they have cycling sessions that are designed to achieve your health goals. And we love their design and green neon color at ELY SÉIDE!
